What it can't do

This section isn't a disclaimer. It's part of the product.

  • It does not follow standard operator precedence. ClarSum evaluates 3+5×2 as 16, not 13 — left to right, the way you'd run the tape with pen and paper. This is deliberate and every step is shown on screen. But it means ClarSum is not a scientific calculator. If you need precedence, use something else. We'd rather say this here than have you discover it on a bill.
  • The free version shows one ad on cold start. One placement, no others.
  • Voice and OCR are only as good as Apple's engines. They run locally, which is the point, but they do misread — so every result is one tap (or one long-press) away from a manual fix.
  • No China mainland App Store release yet. It has not been submitted there yet.

What it does

Some math moments aren't for typing. Cooking with messy hands. Driving when the meter is running. Squinting at a stack of receipts.

ClarSum gives you three ways in — tap, talk, or snap — and runs all of them on device.

Who it's for, and what problem it solves

The system calculator assumes two things: that your hands are free, and that you can see the keys. Both assumptions break at exactly the moments you most need to do arithmetic — mid-recipe, mid-drive, mid-receipt-pile, or simply when the numbers are too small to read.

ClarSum is built for those moments, and for the people the default calculator quietly leaves out: low vision, presbyopia, anyone who can't tap precisely.

Three ways to calculate

Tap

Big keys, high contrast, large numerals. Every button is at least 44pt (Apple's minimum touch target), and the main digits are noticeably larger than the system calculator. Works with gloves on, in glare, or when you just want bigger text. Full VoiceOver support throughout.

Talk

Hold the mic and say "three forty-five plus six seventy-eight." ClarSum transcribes locally via Apple Speech. Dialog mode lets you keep going — "plus three, change to minus, what was that?" — without re-tapping the mic.

Snap

Point the camera at any receipt, invoice, price tag, or screen with numbers. Apple Vision grabs the total and drops it into your running expression. Long-press to edit a single character.

Privacy

100% on device. No cloud. No account. No data leaves your iPhone.

  • Does not upload photos, voice recordings, or calculation history
  • Does not require an account
  • Does not embed third-party analytics SDKs — the ad SDK is the only third-party code, and it is removed entirely in Pro

Free ClarSum includes everything above. Pro is a one-time in-app purchase, not a subscription — it removes the launch ad permanently and unlocks AI-enhanced voice (Apple Intelligence dialog mode on iOS 26+).

Questions

Why does ClarSum calculate 3+5×2 as 16 instead of 13?

On purpose. ClarSum evaluates left to right, the same way you'd run the tape with pen and paper. Every step shows on screen so you can see what's happening and undo a wrong tap. If you need standard operator precedence, ClarSum is not the calculator for you — we'd rather say that than have you find out on a bill.

Does my data leave the phone?

No. OCR runs through Apple Vision, speech runs through Apple Speech, both on device. No cloud, no account, no data leaves your iPhone. ClarSum does not collect your name, email, location, or contacts, and does not upload photos, voice recordings, or calculation history.

How do I calculate without using my hands?

Hold the mic and say it — "three forty-five plus six seventy-eight." Dialog mode lets you keep going ("plus three, change to minus, what was that?") without re-tapping the mic. Anything ClarSum gets wrong is one tap away from a fix.

Are there ads?

One. A single launch-screen ad shows when you open the app from cold; that is the only ad placement. The ad SDK is the only third-party code in the app, and it is removed entirely in Pro.
